It’s been a few years since I began my yoga practice, and I must admit that it has been a journey. It started simply for me: planking for 45 seconds daily. It was all I could give at the time, but after committing to the practice for months, I found that my body was more toned and stronger. Soon, I found myself effortlessly flowing through vinyasas. Over time, the practice became more spiritual for me, as it aligned with many of the metaphysical principles I was studying. I began to learn about the body’s energy centers and how to center myself more than ever before. I found myself on a 6-month yoga journey. I loved that time of my life; my mental clarity and physical body were at their peak.
However, over time, things waned. While I still practice often, it’s been a while since I’ve had that feeling. I always come back to the practice because I understand there’s something special about the physical meeting the spiritual.
Here I am today, four months into April 2025. I’ve learned so much, and I know that I will continue with the practice. As I dive deeper into Yoga philosophy, I’ve come across a powerful adage that has renewed my veracity for the practice. That is Patanjali’s Sutra: “Yoga is Now.” Living in the atha, or “now,” is a powerful place to be.
If I continued on my current path—where I looked at the past and all of the times I didn’t show up for myself after showing up for myself daily—I would be stuck in a rut. But there is something so special about the moment of now. In the now, we hold the power.
The power to steer the sails.
The power to be the change.
Remember that yoga starts now.
